CAPE & Starz #TakeThe Lead Set Showrunners Incubator Inaugural Class for Asian & Pacific Islander TV Writers<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment reveals the inaugural class for its latest program, the\u00a0CAPE<\/a>\u00a0Showrunners Incubator, powered by\u00a0Starz #TakeTheLead<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are Kiel McNaughton, Chris Bessounian, Johanna Lee, Aaron Ho, Oanh Ly, Tianna Majumdar-Langham, Lauren Moon and Kyle Lau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building on more than a decade with the CAPE New Writers Fellowship for emerging TV writers, the Showrunners Incubator focuses on the other end of the TV writing spectrum. Asian and Pacific Islander TV writers on the brink of showrunning are offered the opportunity to receive exclusive mentorship and real-world training and education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the mentors, speakers and contributors participating are Albert Cheng, VP, Head of Prime Video U.S.; Alex Tse, showrunner, Wu-Tang: An American Saga<\/em>; Jessica Gao, head writer, She-Hulk: Attorney At Law<\/em>; Dana Ledoux Miller, co-showrunner, Thai Cave Rescue<\/em>; Monica Macer, showrunner, Macgyver<\/em> and Gentefied<\/em>; Christian Bustamante, casting director, The Accidental Getaway Driver<\/em>; and Talha Asad, VP, Drama Programming, HBO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExecutives constantly ask CAPE to recommend showrunners, and when we include number twos on our list, we often hear they prefer previous showrunners, which creates a bit of a catch-22,\u201d said Michelle K. Sugihara, CAPE\u2019s Executive Director. \u201cThus, recognizing the unique skill set required of showrunners (including both creative and management skills), we designed this program as a hands-on Showrunner prep training ground primarily focused on writers with an immediate need and far along in the development process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is our ongoing commitment to provide opportunities for underrepresented voices and supply them with necessary training to advance their careers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inaugural class consists of experienced drama and comedy writers with imminent shows in development. Learn more about them below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aaron Ho<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(he\/him) is a Chinese American writer from Fresno, Calif., focusing on stories featuring culture clash, hopeless romantics, and loud families oddly similar to his own. After paying his way through college with the help of poker winnings, Aaron began his career as a CAPE New Writers Award winner and alum of the Disney ABC Writing Program. He currently has a pilot in development at Nickelodeon. His credits include Disney Channel\u2019s\u00a0Austin & Ally<\/em>, Netflix\u2019s\u00a0Trolls: The Beat Goes On!<\/em>\u00a0and ABC\u2019s\u00a0Fresh Off The Boat<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johanna Lee<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(she\/her) is the showrunner and executive producer for\u00a0Pearl<\/em>, a project set up at Wiip Studios. She is also a co-executive producer on Netflix\u2019s\u00a0Pulse<\/em>. She recently developed a\u00a0Revenge<\/em>\u00a0spinoff for ABC\/ABC Signature\/Temple Hill and an original idea for Sony entitled\u00a0Privilege.\u00a0<\/em>Before, she was a co-EP on\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>\u00a0and The CW\u2019s reboot of\u00a0Charmed<\/em>. Her credits also include Netflix\u2019s\u00a0Altered Carbon<\/em>, ABC\u2019s\u00a0The Good Doctor\u00a0<\/em>and ABC\u2019s Scandal, where she wrote the 100th episode of the series. Before writing for television, Johanna directed the Netflix documentary The Pit, inspired by her time as a trader on Wall Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lauren Moon<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(she\/they) is a queer, third-generation Korean American writer based in Los Angeles by way of Dallas, Texas. Moon loves stories of offbeat characters finding their voices and has been lucky to explore that as a writer on\u00a0Good Trouble<\/em>,\u00a0Atypical<\/em>,\u00a0Dash & Lily,<\/em>\u00a0and as a writer-producer for series and pilots from Netflix, Sony, Amazon and Apple. She is an alum of the 2018 CAPE New Writers Fellowship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kiel McNaughton<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(he\/him) is a writer, director and producer of diverse narrative content including the comedy series\u00a0Good Grie<\/em>f (Sundance Now\/AMC\/IFC), the film trilogy of\u00a0Waru<\/em>,\u00a0Vai<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0K\u0101inga<\/em>\u00a0and the action-comedy\u00a0The Legend of Baron To\u2019a<\/em>, which marked his directorial feature debut. In 2023, he won Best Director from the 2023 New Zealand Television Awards for the telefeature\u00a0Princess of Chaos<\/em>. McNaughton is the creator and showrunner of the upcoming 8-part drama series,\u00a0Tangata Pai<\/em>\u00a0for Warner Bros Discovery\/Three in New Zealand. As a director, Kiel\u2019s next feature is the horror\/thriller\u00a0Whyte Xmas<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyle Lau<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(he\/him) is a WGA Award-nominated writer\/director from San Francisco. He is a writer\/producer for the upcoming 20th series, Deli Boys for Onyx on Hulu, and also served as writer\/co-producer for HBO Max\u2019s\u00a0Clone High<\/em>\u00a0and Comedy Central\u2019s\u00a0Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens<\/em>. Previously, Lau worked as a staff writer on ABC\u2019s\u00a0Fresh Off The Boat<\/em>. He is currently developing and executive producing an animated project with Sony Television and music label, 88rising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oanh Ly<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>(she\/her) was born in S\u00e0i G\u00f2n, Vi\u1ec7t Nam. She arrived in America as a boat refugee and grew up in Houston, Texas. She attended the University of Texas at Austin where she studied playwriting. She started her TV writing career on the hit CBS crime show\u00a0Criminal Minds.<\/em>\u00a0Her credits include\u00a0The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina<\/em>\u00a0and Sweet Tooth. She currently has projects in development with Twentieth TV and Tomorrow Studios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tianna Majumdar-Langham<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(she\/her) &\u00a0Chris Bessounian<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(he\/him) are co-executive producers on the eighth season of CBS\u2019s\u00a0S.W.A.T.<\/em>\u00a0They\u2019re also developing a legal drama,\u00a0The Justice Factor<\/em>y, with John Wells Productions and WBTV. They previously worked on all six seasons of Fox\u2019s\u00a0The Resident<\/em>. They are Academy Nicholl Fellows with their screenplay,\u00a0Guns and Saris<\/em>, which Freida Pinto is producing. Tianna is British Indian. Chris is Armenian and Egyptian and was raised in Australia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
