Congrats to the 2019 CAPE New Writer Fellows!

This article is about a week old, but I just wanted to congratulate the eight writers admitted into this year’s CAPE New Writers Fellowship.

About ten years ago, CAPE helped me launch my writing career and I am forever grateful. I remain a huge supporter of CAPE and encourage anyone reading this to also become involved (especially if you identify as API or enjoy telling their stories).

For more on CAPE and what they’re all about, visit:

Also, thank you CAPE for the shout-out in the article, glad to have my name associated with such an amazing organization. Keep up the great work!

“I Have A Show!” – WGA Panel

I’ll be speaking on tomorrow night’s WGA panel all about pitching, developing, and selling original pilots. If you’re a WGA member, I invite you to attend — you should have received an e-mail in recent weeks with an RSVP link.

Look forward to seeing you all there and dropping some knowledge… Or I’ll just nod along with the smart things other panelists say and enjoy a free bottled water. Whatevs.

Breakthrough Reading Series

EXCITING NEWS!!! Excerpts from my sitcom pilot, “I Got You Abe” will be performed at a live reading put on by the “Breakthrough Reading Series.” It’s a monthly event where chosen writers get to hear their material performed by actors cast right on the spot!

It’s taking place this coming Wednesday, March 20th at The Broadwater Theater in Hollywood. There’s a networking hour from 7pm-8pm, with readings beginning at 8pm, then more networking to follow. Yes, there’s a bar connected to the theater, so yay — weekday drinking!

For more info on the event and how to get tickets:

Hope to see you there!

“Crazy Rich Asians” in theaters NOW!

“Crazy Rich Asians” hits theaters today!!! I encourage everyone to see this film, it is truly spectacular. I’ve already seen it once and am seeing it again tonight, and will probably go a third time. It is so exciting and inspiring to have an American studio film starring an all Asian cast that is also written and directed by Asian filmmakers — I never thought it would happen! Congrats Adele Lim on an amazing script!

This film is so much more than a “rom com,” it digs deep into love, family, culture, and finding happiness from within. And trust me, you don’t have to be ASIAN or CRAZY RICH to enjoy or relate to this film. It’s universal in so many ways and I promise you’ll leave the theater satisfied.

There’s been a lot of articles and interviews in the press lately, but this one was one of my faves. Check it out!

Jon M. Chu, Alan Yang & Gina Prince-Bythewood On Raising The Volume Of Diverse Voices – CAA Amplify

“I never saw another Asian writer in writers’ room until my show… It’s about the next generation. Make it a point to hire a diverse writing staff. I think we have one white on the writing staff and the show came out fine.”
